Research Matters Virtual Scavenger Hunt

The following are the official rules and regulations applicable to the Research Matters Virtual Scavenger Hunt 2015.

  1. Competition
    The “Research Matters Virtual Scavenger Hunt” (the “Competition”) is run by the Council of Ontario Universities (the “Administrator”). These are the official rules and regulations (the “Rules”) applicable to persons who enter the Competition and their parent(s) and/or legal guardian(s) if such persons are under the age of majority in Ontario (each an “Entrant”). By entering the Contest, you accept these Rules and agree to be bound by them and the interpretation of these Rules by the Administrator. If you are under the age of majority in Ontario, you represent and warrant that your parent(s) and/or legal guardian(s) also accept these Rules (for themselves and on your behalf) and agree to be bound by them and the interpretation of these Rules by the Administrator.
  2. Competition Period
    The Competition shall begin on, and Entries (defined below) will be accepted from, 12:00:00 a.m. (EST) on February 17, 2015 until 11:59:00 p.m. (EST) March 2, 2015 (the “Competition Period”).
  3. Competition Group
    For the purposes of these Rules, the “Competition Group” is composed of the Administrator, members of the Competition Working Group, and the Selection Panel. Information concerning the composition of the Working Group and the Selection Panel can be accessed on request to the Administrator.
  4. Eligibility
    Subject to the following restrictions, the Competition is open to all residents of Ontario:

    (i) Cash Grand Prizes (defined below) are available only to Entrants who are enrolled at an Ontario university at the time such Cash Grand Prizes are awarded
    (ii) employees of the Competition Group, as well as members of the immediate family (such as their father, mother, brothers, sisters or children) of such employees, their legal or common-law spouses, and any persons with whom such employees reside, are not eligible to enter the Competition; and
    (iii) suppliers and agents of the Working Group that participated in the development and/or promotion of the Competition are not eligible to enter the Competition.
  5. Methods of Entry
    5.1 There is no purchase necessary to enter the Competition.
    5.2 There will be a series of “clues” released each weekday during the Competition Period at (the “Research Matters Website”). Two “clues” will be released each weekday during the competition period, except for Tuesday, February 17, Thursday February 26, and Friday, February 27, 2015 when three “clues” will be released daily. Each clue will take the form of a short video in which a university student will provide details about a research initiative taking place at an Ontario university, and ask a question pertaining to it (each a “Clue”).
    5.3 The answers to each Clue will be a single word(s) or short phrases, and can be obtained by reviewing relevant websites.
    5.4 To enter for a chance to win a Daily Prize (defined below), the Entrant must submit the correct answer to a Clue through a contest form on the Research Matters Website (each a “Daily Prize Entry”) by 11:59:00 p.m. (EST) on the day immediately following the day the Clue is released (each a “Daily Prize Period”).
    5.5 To enter for a chance to win a Grand Prize (defined below), all 21 answers must be correctly entered into the Competition grid found at the Research Matters Website (the “Grid”). When all 21 answers are correctly entered into the Grid, the marked column of letters will spell out a phrase (the “Phrase”).  The correctly completed Grid must be submitted (i) via website; (ii) by mail to Research Matters, Council of Ontario Universities, Suite 1100, 180 Dundas St. W., Toronto ON, M5G 1Z8 (the “COU Office”); or (iii) by fax to 416-979-8635, to be entered for a chance to win a Grand Prize (each a “Grand Prize Entry”).  All Grand Prize Entries must be received prior to 11:59:00 p.m. (EST) on March 2, 2015.
    5.6 The Administrator shall have the right to reject any Entry that it determines, in its sole discretion, does not comply with these Rules.
    5.7 All Grand Prize Entries and Daily Prize Entries (collectively, the “Entries”) become the property of the Administrator and none will be returned.

  6. Prizes
    6.1 The prize`s available in connection with the Competition are as follows:

    (i) A collection of Research Matters merchandise selected by the Administrator in its sole discretion (each a “Daily Prize”).  The approximate retail value of each Daily Prize is $10.00;
    (ii) Five Cash Grand Prizes that consist of  $500 (each a “Cash Grand Prize”), available to Ontario university students with valid ID;
    (iii) Five “lunch with a researcher” classroom prizes, available for full-classroom entrants in Ontario from Kindergarten up to Grade 12. The “lunch with a researcher prize” will include a visit from a university researcher and lunch for the class to be provided by the Administrator in its sole discretion;  and
    (iv) Twenty-one gift bags filled with items selected by the Administrator in its sole discretion, available to all entrants (each a “Gift Bag Grand Prize”, and together with the Cash Grand Prizes, the “Grand Prizes”). The approximate retail value of each Gift Bag Grand Prize is $40.00.
    6.2 All Daily Prizes and Grand Prizes (collectively, the “Prizes”) must be accepted as awarded and are not transferable; there is no cash alternative and otherwise than as set out below, there are no substitutions.
    6.3 Administrator reserves the right, in its sole discretion, and for any reason whatsoever, to substitute for any Prize, or part thereof, another prize of equivalent or greater value, without limitation. Such substituted prize shall be subject to these Rules as though it was a Prize.

  7. Prizes
    7.1 Daily Prizes. In respect of each Daily Prize Period, a random draw of all Daily Prize Entries received during such Daily Prize Period shall be held on the afternoon immediately following the Daily Prize Period at the COU Office to award the Daily Prize applicable to such Daily Prize Period. The odds of winning a Daily Prize are dependent on the number of eligible Daily Prize Entries received during the Daily Prize Period.
    7.2 Grand Prizes. A random draw of all Grand Prize Entries received during the Competition Period shall be held on Monday, March 9, 2015 at the COU Office to award the Grand Prizes. The odds of winning a Grand Prize are dependent on the number of eligible Grand Prize Entries received during the Competition Period.
    7.3 Each Entrant selected by random draw referred to in Sections 7.1and 7.2 above shall be deemed to be a “Selected Entrant”.
    7.4 The Administrator shall use reasonable efforts to contact each Selected Entrant via the e-mail address provided by such Selected Entrant in his/her Entry, but in the event that the Administrator cannot contact a Selected Entrant within 5 business days from the time of the draw, the draw of that Selected Entrant shall be deemed void.
    7.5 To be declared the winner of a Prize (each a “Winner”) and be eligible to collect a Prize, the Selected Entrant will be required to: (i) respond to the e-mail from the Administrator or its representatives  notifying him/her of his/her selection; (ii) answer correctly a mathematical skill testing question; (iii) in respect of Cash Grand Prizes, provide a current, valid student ID number from an Ontario university or such other evidence as required by Administrator to confirm enrollment in an Ontario university; and (iv) sign and deliver a declaration and release which (among other things): (a) confirms compliance with these Rules; (b) acknowledges acceptance of the Prize as awarded; and (c) confirms the release set out in Section 8.4.  If any of the foregoing requirements are not met to the satisfaction of the Administrator, the draw of that Selected Entrant shall be deemed void.
    7.6 In the event that the draw of a Selected Entrant is deemed void, invalid, or disqualified, the Selected Entrant shall lose any right to a Prize and Administrator will draw another Entry from all eligible Entries received in respect of the relevant Prize and such Entrant shall be deemed to be a Selected Entrant. This process will be repeated as necessary.
    7.7 The Cash Grand Prize Winners will be announced at an event to be held in on the evening of April 1, 2015 in Toronto.
    7.8 Once a Selected Entrant is deemed to be a Winner, the Administrator, or its representatives, will send to the Winner an e-mail, informing him or her of the method by which he or she may take possession of the applicable Prize. All Prizes not collected by May  6, 2015 shall be deemed to be forfeit by the applicable Winner.

  8. General Terms and Conditions
    8.1 Verification of Entries. The validity of any Entry is subject to verification by the Administrator. Any illegible, incomplete or fraudulent Entries will be disqualified. Any Entrant or other individual who enters or attempts to enter the Competition in a manner that is contrary to these Rules or that is otherwise disruptive to the proper operation of the Competition or by its nature is unjust to other Entrants or potential Entrants will be disqualified. All decisions made by the Administrator or its representatives, including without limitation those concerning the eligibility or disqualification of Entrants, are final and binding without right of appeal.
    8.2 Number of Prize/Winners. By entering the Competition, each Entrant acknowledges that the Administrator shall not be required under any circumstances to award more prizes than the number of available Prizes, as set out in these Rules. In the event that, for any reason whatsoever (including, without limitation, as a result of an error, malfunction or defect in the design, advertising, management, implementation or administration of the Competition, whether mechanical, electronic, human or otherwise) the number of Selected Entrants, declared Winners or the number of Prizes claimed by Entrants is greater than the number of Prizes available, the Administrator reserves the right, in its sole discretion, to end the Competition in whole or in part, without notice, and to award the correct number of Prizes among the correct number of Winners, selected in accordance with these Rules from among those eligible Entries validly submitted prior to the termination of the Competition.
    8.3 Other Changes to Competition Rules. Without limiting the provisions of Section 8.2, the Administrator reserves the right, in its sole and absolute discretion, to modify, cancel, terminate or suspend the Competition, in whole or in part, in the event of any cause or circumstance, including, without limitation, any virus, computer bug or unauthorized human intervention or any other cause that is beyond the control of the Administrator, that could corrupt or affect the administration, security, impartiality or normal course of the Competition.
    8.4 Release and Exclusion of Liability by the Entrants. By entering or attempting to enter the Competition, each Entrant and/or purported Entrant agrees: (i) to release, discharge, and forever hold harmless the Competition Group from any and all claims, actions, damages, demands, manner of actions, causes of action, suits, debts, duties, accounts, bonds, covenants, warranties, indemnities, claims over, contracts and liabilities of whatever nature or kind arising out of, or in connection with the Entrant’s participation or attempted participation in the Competition, compliance or non-compliance with these Rules and acceptance and use of the Prize; and (ii) if selected as a Selected Entrant, to sign the declaration and release documentation (Section 7.5) in this regard before receiving his/her Prize. The Competition Group will not be responsible for lost, incomplete, late or misdirected Entries for any failure of the Competition website, if applicable, during the Competition Period, or for any technical malfunction or other problems with any telephone network or lines, computer on- line systems, servers, access providers, computer equipment or software or for any technical problems or traffic congestion on the Internet or at any website, or any combination of the foregoing, and will not be liable for any resulting death, injury or damage to any person or property arising from, or relating to, that person’s or any other person’s participation or attempted participation in the Competition. Any attempt to deliberately damage any website or to undermine the legitimate operation of this Competition is a violation of criminal and civil laws and, should such an attempt be made, the Administrator reserves the right to seek remedies and damages to the fullest extent permitted by law, including criminal prosecution.
    8.5 Name/Image of Winners. By entering the Competition, each Winner authorizes the Administrator and its advertising and promotional agencies and their respective employees or other representatives to broadcast, publish and otherwise use his or her name, photograph, image, statements regarding the Competition or any Prize, place of residence and (or) voice for publicity purposes, worldwide and without any form of remuneration.
    8.6 Personal Information. Unless the Entrant has otherwise authorized the Administrator or another entity related to the Competition to contact him or her, the personal information gathered about Entrants in connection with this Competition will be used solely for the administration of the Competition and is subject to the Administrator’s privacy policies (available at, and no communication unrelated to the Competition, commercial or otherwise, will be sent to the Entrant by the Administrator.
    8.7 Severability. If any term within these Rules is deemed to be illegal, invalid or otherwise unenforceable by a court of law for any reason, the affected term shall be deleted from these Rules and the remaining terms shall continue in full force and effect.
    8.8 Disputes. In the event of any dispute regarding the conduct or results of the Competition, these Rules or any other matters relating to the Competition, the decision of the Administrator shall be final and no correspondence or discussion shall be entered into.
    8.9 Identity of the Entrant. For the purposes of these Rules, the Entrant of any Entry submitted is deemed to be the person who is the holder of the e-mail account submitted in the Entry. It is to this individual that the Prize will be awarded if selected and declared as the Winner.
    8.10 Laws. The Competition, these Rules and any other matters relating to the Competition shall be governed and construed in accordance with the laws of the Province of Ontario and the laws of Canada applicable therein. Any dispute will be subject to the exclusive jurisdiction of the courts of the province of Ontario. The Competition is subject to all Federal, Provincial and Municipal laws.
