Hi, my name is Dr. Ginette Lafreniere, Associate Professor, Faculty of Social Work, Wilfrid Laurier University, and I'll be answering the question, "Why are women so obsessed with being youthful?"
This question needs to be addressed, deconstructed and debated. Which women are we talking about? White women? North American women? Women not informed by feminism? There are women from cultural communities here and abroad who celebrate growing older, so the premise of the question is grounded in a White, Eurocentric discourse. Additionally, how North American women are socially constructed have a lot to do with how they perceive themselves. Finally, growing up in a capitalist society is also a determining factor which may influence how one would perceive themselves in a market economy.
Dr. Rachel Berman, Associate Professor at Ryerson University, and Dr. Shelagh Campbell, Assistant Professor at University of Regina, also answers the question "Why are women so obsessed with being youthful?'
