Making Research Local

2010

Urban planner David Hulchanski published The Three Cities Within Toronto in 2010, demonstrating increasingly sharp divides in income and living standards. His startling report showed the middle-income area of the city shrinking dramatically, the high income area increasing slightly and the low-income area increasing substantially. He argued that these trends could be reversed by policies to make housing more affordable to low-income households and efforts to expand access to transit and services in neighbourhoods where the need is greatest.

His ground-breaking research at the University of Toronto — funded in part by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council — contributed substantially to the debate on inequity in Canada’s biggest city.
