Setting Standards for Language Testing

1989

An expert in language testing and curriculum, Carleton University’s Janna Fox developed a standardized test of a person’s ability to use English at the university and college level. The Canadian Academic English Language Assessment (CAEL) is unique because it is topic-based. Test-takers read articles, listen to a lecture, answer questions and write a short essay — all on one subject.

The test is recognized as a reliable predictor of academic success and is used by admissions officers at colleges and universities across the country.
