Building Community

Researchers are more than just researchers. They are citizens, volunteers, advocates and activists. It’s often said that knowledge is power, but knowledge also is a burden of responsibility. This section highlights how the ideas emerging from university research build stronger communities – locally and around the world.

It used to be that questions about community were considered difficult or impossible to study in an academic setting. Trust, happiness, identities, social interactions and other fundamentals of healthy communities didn’t seem to fit easily into the model of peer review and academic rigour. Today, though, thanks to creativity, multi-disciplinarity and dedication, university researchers from every institution are discovering new truths about why communities take on their unique characteristics.
