Jobs & the Economy

Prosperity doesn’t just happen – it’s not luck of the draw. Ontario university researchers are not only driving the innovations that keep this province and this country competitive; they are also developing new ways of understanding how economies work, and how they could work better.

University research’s contributions to the economy come in several, very different forms. Economists model successes and failures, extracting new truths about how to prevent a crash or foster a boom, build a stronger foundation or adapt to a new economic climate. Other researchers drive innovations that can be commercialized, enriching Ontario and the world by not only delivering new ideas, but also jobs and profits. And finally, researchers learn a system of rigorous problem-solving that they can bring to bear in the business, policy and not-for-profit sectors – they are, as people, thought leaders and also drivers of the economy.
